The line immediately following this dot
command is used as a permanent merge overlay.
This means that the defined overlay line is
merged with each regular file line.
The merge means that any characters in the
regular file line will "shadow" any
characters underneath it. The overlay line
will only "show through" in columns of file
line which contain spaces.
