Windows Update Checks for updates for a very long time

Symptoms:
Windows Update "Check for updates" takes a very long time and ends with no updates available.

Solution:

  1. Windows Update / Advanced options
  2. Uncheck "Get updates for other Microsoft products"
  3. Reboot, open Windows Update and "Check for Updates"
  4. Update should download and install successfully. Repeat the update process until no more updates are available.
  5. Windows Update / Advanced options
  6. Check "Get updates for other Microsoft products"
  7. You should now be able download and install updates for other Microsoft products

Windows Update Failed to install

Symptoms:
Windows Update "View update history" shows an update that failed to install more than once.

Solution
If Solution 1 does not work, try Solution 2.

Solution 1:

  1. Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Administrative Tools\Services
    "Extended" tab
    Scroll down and find "Windows Update", click it
    Click "Stop the service"
    Note the current "Startup type" "Automatic (Delayed Start)"
    Change to "Disabled".
    Click OK button.
    Reboot.
  2. Delete all files and folders in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
    For safety, delete to the Recycle Bin.
    Reboot.
  3. Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Administrative Tools\Services
    "Extended" tab
    Scroll down and find "Windows Update", click it
    Change "Startup type" to "Automatic (Delayed Start)"
    Click "Start" the service
    Click OK button.
    Reboot.
  4. Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Windows Update
    Click "Check for updates"
